2001/2002 Information Power (IP2) Advisory Group Goals & Objectives:
Goal #1: Continual Development and Refinement of State IP2 Implementation Plan
Target Group: IP2 Advisory Group
Objective #1: To hold an Information Power Implementation
Advisory Group meeting at least once a year in order to examine needs
assessments that have been conducted throughout the year and set goals for
the upcoming school year.
Proposed Activities:
- Offer an university credit class during the summer that continues the
development of Information Power and serves as a networking of librarians,
particularly school librarians, across the state.
- Conduct an IP2 Advisory Meeting during each fall at the WLA Conference.
Goal #2: Identify the Issues/Concerns/Needs of Library Media Specialists in the State of
Target Group: All paid school library personnel in the State of Wyoming K-12 Schools
Objective #1: To continually conduct a needs assessment
following all IP2 Awareness Activities in order to aid in School Library
Reform in Wyoming
Proposed Activities:
- Conduct a needs assessment during the WLA Fall Conference IP2 Meeting to
aide in goal-setting for the upcoming year.
- Require participants at all workshops or university credit courses to
complete an evaluation that identifies needs for the upcoming year
Goal #3: Enhance Communication and Networking for School Library Personnel in the State of Wyoming
Target Group: school library media personnel
Objective #1: To create a statewide e-list for all school
library personnel to better facilitate communication between all school
librarians in the State of Wyoming by the spring of 2001.
Proposed Activities:
- Work with Brian Greene and Erin Kinney to create a mailing list through
the WLA for our section SSLMP.
- Promote membership of the mailing list so that better communication can be happen between the librarians and library personnel in the schools across the state by adding all section members’ email addresses to the list. If they choose not to participate, they will have to unsubscribe from the mailing list.
Objective #2: Advocate for a liaison between the State Library,
the Department of Education, Wyoming Community Colleges, and the
University of Wyoming.
Proposed Activities:
- Draw up a proposal for a 2-year contract liaison between the State Dept.
of Education and the State Library to provide leadership in the
implementation of IP2 and library media reform as outlined in Information
Power.
Goal #4: Secure Information About the Status of School Libraries in the State of Wyoming
Target Group: school library media specialists
Objective #1: To create and conduct a statewide surveys that can be used to compare information with the benchmark survey conducted in the fall of 2000.
Proposed Activities:
- Tally the results of the survey and present the information to the members of the SSLMP section of WLA.
- Print the information in the SSLMP newsletter and present information to the State Department of Education.
Goal #5: Establish Statewide Recommendations and Guidelines For the Development of Quality School Library Media Programs
Target Group: Wyoming librarians, Wyoming Library Association, Wyoming State Department of Education
Objective #1: TTo adopt the Wyoming Information Power Implementation Plan and the 9 National Information Literacy Standards and Guidelines as official guidelines or school library media program
development
Proposed Activities:
- Post continuous updates to the IP2 Implementation Plan and the 9 National Information Literacy Standards on the WLA website page for Information Power
- Secure permission to post the 9 Information Literacy Standards on the WLA website.
Objective #2: To develop a state handbook of Information Power Implementation Guidelines and Resource Materials for use in school libraries by Spring of 2002
Proposed Activities:
- Collect examples of lessons written by librarians from across the state
to place in the notebook either from the Research in the 21st Century
university course or else directly from librarians who are willing to
submit samples.
- Work on building the notebook during the Information Power III 2-credit
university course. Include bibliography of important articles, websites,
and resources that will help with school library reform.
- Use Copernicus (Edgate) to aid in lesson development for library media
- Look at other states’ handbooks i.e. Missouri, Washington, Oregon,
Nebraska
- One or two people take a section and the “experts” in that area; others
add to it.
- Recommend use of TIP and other tutorial programs for personal training
- Make sure we include the ACRL standards in the handbook
- WEN and video network (Ed Downes).
Objective #3: Make a comparison between the state-adopted
standards and benchmarks and identify where the nine information literacy
standards are embedded in these standards.
Proposed Activities:
- Conduct a workshop that addresses the embedding of the nine national
standards in the Wyoming State Standards and Benchmarks.,
- Utilize Betsy Losey’s chart for mapping state standards and benchmarks.
Then use the same chart to compare local standards with nine information
literacy standards to determine “holes” in curriculum
for information literacy standards.
Goal #6: Develop an Awareness of Information Power Across the State
Target Group: all types of librarians, school administrators, teachers, students, governing boards, academic institutions
Objective #1: To bring informed speakers for Information Power implementation from outside the state to heighten the awareness of Information Power and suggest ideas for beginning its implementation
Proposed Activities:
- Secure outside speakers who are experts in their field for WLA conference or spring conference
- Carol Simpson, Copyright, University of Texas;
- Keith Curry Lance, survey for school libraries;
- AASL President, privacy & Internet ethics;
- Doug Johnson, Technology Director for Makato, MN Schools, Ethics in Technology;
- Pam Berger, consultant, Internet Use in K-12.
- Dr. Michael Eisenberg, Big6 Co-Creator, University of Washington, School of Information
Objective #2: To develop presentations, workshops, & conferences that promote the awareness of Information Power, both its guidelines and principles.
Proposed Activities:
- Encourage teachers who are successfully collaborating with librarians to
attend WLA fall conference and present together (collaboratively!).
- Have the University of Wyoming TIP co-creators present the new tutorial
program
- Select “trainers” from Information Power Advisory Group to present local
training workshops that could be offered for PTSB credit.
- Spring Conference, Information Power Discussion Group, Book Talks
Continue offering Information Power University of Wyoming courses,
facilitator: Jan Segerstrom
- Summer university graduate credit courses for school librarians to take
[Make Information Power class longer, worth more credits, and work on IP
Handbook]
- Fall Conference—4 hour post-conference workshop that meets a goal of the
Information Power Implementation Plan.
- Present at statewide organizations such as WSBA, WASP, WAEP, etc.
- Present at regional WYLD meetings if in the format of a seminar or
workshop, not business meeting.
Objective #3: To develop and distribute promotional materials for Information Power implementation
Proposed Activities:
- The librarians and library media staff should present to staff, faculty,
and at local board meetings in order to keep the whole district informed
of Information Power and its “power.”
- Create a brochure that identifies what Information Power is and how to
become informed.
- Make sure that there is time for “sharing sessions” at the fall
conference for Information Power strategies and ideas.
- Develop local and regional groups to discuss Information Power with
luncheon, etc.
- Continue to offer Information Power books for sale at conferences and
workshops where librarians are in attendance—make it easy for librarians
to secure the book.
- Continuous update of the Information Power website page on the WLA
website. Jan Segerstrom will submit materials and information to Erin
Kinney for posting.
- Advertise Information Power through GOWYLD.
- Publish articles about Information Power in statewide newsletters or
publications—a national journal article would be nice about Wyoming!
Goal #7: Develop and Conduct Training Programs Based Upon the Needs of
Wyoming School Library Media Specialists, library assistants and aides.
Target Groups: Library Media Professionals, Administrative Personnel,
Teachers
Objective #1: Identify and train 2 certified library media
specialists from each of the 6 WYLD regions before Sept. 2001. This core
group will train other certified school LMS in their regions to serve as
theInformation Power gurus as well as be part of the Information Power
support group for the WYLD region.
Proposed Activities:
- ”Train the Trainer” program
Information Power III summer graduate course
Objective #2: To train library media personnel and teachers in the use of an information processing model for information problem-solving
Proposed Activities:
- Offer “Research in the 21st Century” as a graduate course for librarians and teachers
Objective #3: Encourage all personnel to take the TIP’s Tutorial
for Information Power on the University of Wyoming web site

Objective #4: Participate in NBPTS (National Board of Professional Teaching Standards) Training

Objective #5: Become familiar with new statewide library network database “facelift” (SIRSI).
Proposed Activities:
- Encourage school library personnel to attend the SIRSI PAC training in
the public library nearest their schools when the State Library visits
their WYLD Region for training of the public librarians.
- After receiving training in the PAC portion of the SIRSI system,
librarians should conduct training sessions for their staff and students
in the Fall 2002
