Definition
A new national guidelines and standards document for library media programs, particularly school libraries, was released by the American Association of School Librarians and Association for Educational Communications and Technology in July 1998. The document, entitled Information Power : Building Partnerships for Learning updates the 1988 Information Power. Found within these guidelines are National Standards for Information Literacy which bring new focus for teaching and learning to library media programs.
Purpose and Background
The intention of the Wyoming Information Power Implementation Advisory Group is twofold: (1) to spearhead the implementation of the new Information Power guidelines and standards in all Wyoming libraries and (2) to assist all Wyoming school libraries in the development of library media programs that are central to the education process and key in delivering curriculum that promotes information literacy skills and active student learning. The Information Power initiative intends to provide a framework for program improvement as well as a means of assessing and evaluating current programs and services.
Vision
It is our vision that all librarians in the State of Wyoming will be actively involved in the implementation of Information Power into library media programs.
Belief
We believe that "The bottom line is student achievement," and that "information literacy-the ability to find and use information -is the keystone of lifelong learning." (ALA, 1998.) Creating a foundation for lifelong learning is at the heart of library media programs.
