Welcome to the Wyoming Library Association

WLA Intellectual Freedom Committee

The following sites are presented as gateways to intellectual freedom information for library environments.

American Library Association Links
  • Office for Intellectual Freedom Homepage
The Office for Intellectual Freedom implements ALA's intellectual freedom policies and disseminates information about the nature and importance of intellectual freedom in libraries. Provides links to organizations, references, library advocacy, issues, awards, programs, publications, and news. A good place to begin your IF search.

  • ALA's Libraries & the Internet Toolkit
ALA provides this "toolkit" to help librarians manage and communicate about the Internet. Sections include: "Librarians Online Tip Sheet", "Libraries and the Internet Fact Sheet", "Libraries, Children & the Internet Q&A", "Statement of Commitment to Excellence in Library Service to Children in a Technological Age", and "Key Contacts". In Adobe format. Permission is granted to libraries to reproduce this Toolkit.

  • Jenner & Block Memorandum of Internet Legal Issues
A memorandum prepared for ALA by Jenner & Block discussing Internet Filtering in Public Libraries. The memo groups legal issues related to Internet filtering into two broad areas of inquiry: First, what potential liability, if any, might a public library face if it installs content-based filtering programs on some or all of the library's Internet terminals? Second, is there any potential liability for a public library's failure to install any filtering software on its Internet terminals? Different scenarios are presented for each inquiry.

Anti-Internet Filtering Sites

  • Peace Fire
Peacefire.org was created in August 1996 to represent the interests of people under 18 in the debate over freedom of speech on the Internet. Peacefire is a "people for young people's freedom of speech" organization, not a "young people for freedom of speech" organization.

Internet Filtering Sites
  • Family Friendly Libraries
Family Friendly Libraries exists to increase awareness of the need to protect children from harmful or age inappropriate materials in public libraries. Their mission includes building healthy and respectful working relationships between parents, taxpayers, librarians and concerned citizens and library Boards of Trustees. Where policies exist that exclude or stifle democracy, reasonable public comments, debate or input at monthly Trustee board meetings work within the system to change those policies. Provides links to FFL's speeches, editorials, books, opinion of ALA, and legal documents.

  • American Family Association
AFA focuses on the influence of television and other media, including pornography, on American society. AFA believes the entertainment industry has played a major role in the decline of traditional family values and wants to hold sponsoring companies accountable. Library filtering is one of AFA's issues. AFA's site provides links to news & information, societal issues, resources, and their bookstore.

Other Sites

  • The Center for Democracy and Technology
The Center for Democracy and Technology supports making user empowerment technology, such as filtering, blocking, monitoring, and "Greenspace" tools, available for families who want to protect their children from viewing inappropriate material online. However, CDT opposes governmental attempts to set a national standard defining inappropriate material or restricting adult access to constitutionally protected speech. This site provides CDT recommended resources, activities, and headlines.

  • The Center for Democracy and Technology
The FACT Web site is intended to be a resource for anyone wanting to learn about the First Amendment. It provides information on all the liberties guaranteed by the amendment. The site will be continually updated and expanded. FACT maintains links to other Web sites that have relevant material.
